Twitter Chaos in Europe

It's not just Silicon Valley staff who have felt the impact of Elon Musk's Twitter takeover.

You may have noticed that it’s been rather chaotic over at Twitter recently. Swathes of staff have been fired or quit since Elon Musk took over the social media giant. Much of the coverage has focussed on the goings-on in Silicon Valley, but European staff have been affected too. There have been layoffs and the resignations of key figures, notably in Twitter’s European headquarters in Dublin and its London base. This matters a lot, both in terms of the products being managed in those offices and Dublin’s importance when it comes to privacy and engagement with the EU.

It feels like Musk does not take such things seriously, seeing everything as an engineering issue. Yet it is as likely, if not more so, that it will be a regulatory, not a technical issue that takes down Twitter. If the service is not allowed in Europe because the EU thinks it is not in compliance with privacy regulations that is obviously a serious problem. And many of the key people dealing with that have walked out the door.
