Meet The BBC's First-Ever Tech Editor

As the BBC celebrates its centenary, its first tech editor, Zoe Kleinman, provides insight into her fascinating role.
BBC Tech Editor Zoe Kleinman outside New Broadcasting House

The BBC has always taken tech coverage seriously, from having specific technology and science programming, to regularly featuring it in its news bulletins. It has also long had excellent reporters, producers, desk editors and correspondents covering the subject. However, until recently, it did not actually have a Technology Editor. Zoe Kleinman was appointed to that role and now leads the corporation’s technology coverage across key shows and online, as well as presenting the BBC’s Tech Tent podcast. (I was actually a guest on her first week in the presenting chair for that show!)

The BBC is also celebrating its centenary - yes, Aunty is 100 years old! It is a huge milestone for an institution known around the globe. It seemed an apt moment to talk with a journalist tasked with covering one of the most forward-looking, but also one of the most immediately relevant, beats around.

Zoe Kleinman joins host Charlotte Henry to discuss being the BBC’s first-ever Tech Editor, the changing nature of tech news and what comes next for some of the biggest firms in the sector. She also reflects on 100 years of the BBC and reveals what she looks for in a story.
