2023 Predictions - The Future of Media

New podcast mini-series looking ahead to the new year.

It’s that time of year when we are tempted to both look back at the previous 12 months and look ahead to the year to come. There seems no doubt that 2023 is going to be a big one in the world of tech and media, with struggles and opportunities available in equal measure. That is why I’m starting a mini-series on The Addition podcast to try and predict what might happen in the next year. However, my predictions tend to be absolutely terrible, whether they be about sport, politics or the industry I work in. So I called in a few experts to help!

There is so much to unpick. What will the ad market look like? Will platforms like Substack grow or will journalists look for some level of security at bigger outlets, despite the current round of layoffs occurring at major media companies? Will the public begin to trust journalists again?

To start off a new mini-series predicting the world of media in 2023, I am joined by Brian Morrissey, who has seen various peaks and troughs during his career. Amongst other things, he edited Digiday and now runs The Rebooting on Substack. He has a deep understanding of the difficulties that media outlets can face during an economic downturn and the opportunities available to those able to grab them. Brian thinks there will be a “rebundling”, as individual brands come together to keep their audience. He is also very interested in how AI might affect journalism. This, frankly, terrifies me. Is ChatGPT really going to replace real-life journalists?!
